Hiking Blossom Peak

When standing on the front steps, Blossom Peak is the tallest peak in front of you a little to the left.  The peak is not on the property but is adjacent to it.  Every time I look up there, I want to see the view from up top.  So, today I finally did.

I could get to the peak from the property.  It adjoins the cabin's 150 acres with no fences in between.  Now that I've been up there, I can say it is not an easy climb.  Especially all of the way to the top.  There is no marked trail and parts of the rocky top are downright dangerous.

The peak is at 2,457' elevation.  The cabin is at 1,243' elevation.  So that's a gain of 1200 feet and it's pretty steep the whole way.

To get started, I just followed the first half of the Little Blossom trail.  The trail starts at the cabin.  Just to the right of the water tank is the beginning of the trail heading up.

The Start of Little Blossom Trail

I followed the zig-zag trail up the steep ascent for Little Blossom.  Once I got to the flat ridge, I took a left towards Blossom Peak instead of the right towards Little Blossom.  There's a hump in the rigdeline on the way up to Blossom Peak that I call The Citadel.  It's a rocky outcropping with lot's of deep ravines in it that need to be carefully crossed.

From The Citadel, the best approach to Blossom Peak appeared to be to follow the grassy path up for a while and then to follow the grass to the right.  The side of the peak I was looking at was rocky and steep.  I was hoping that when I got around to the backside that there would be an easier way to the top.

So I headed up the grassy path towards the peak.  I made two friends along the way.  And I worked my way towards the right as best as could.  I had to wait to get above a couple of steep ravines before I could really make progress towards the right and the backside.

These guys just quietly observed me

Once I got all the way to the right and could see the backside, I realized that the front side was the easy route.  The backside was much, much steeper and felt like a cliff.

The backside is too steep

It looked to me that heading up the rock from this location would be the best approach to the top.  But there was no clear path.  It's just bare rock.  And the rock is full of deep crevices, so I had to be careful.  I had to try a couple of different routes which got me to a rocky flat area before the last climb.

It was at this point that I decided that I gone far enough.  I was alone and this area was dangerous.  So I decided to leave the last 150' of the climb for another day when I was with others.
